Who doesn't love cake?!?! I absolutely LOVE good wedding cake but boy oh boy can wedding cakes run up your budget. Wedding cakes tend to run between $1.50/slice to $10.00/slice (What?!?! $10..I know shocking) and sometimes can actually be even more; the higher the pricing the more elaborate, multi-tiered, fondant-swathed extravanganzas you see in so many bridal magazine. So to help you save a few dollars here are a few tips from the wedding cake pros...
1. Your cake only needs one "real" tier - which is obviously the one you are going to cut and eat. The other tiers can be dummies (usually styrofoam covered with icing). You can ask your cake baker for an additional "kitchen," or sheet, cake to serve to guests - it will have the same cake and icing but without all of the elaborate decorations so it will cut your cost per serving.
2. Most venues often charge a cake cutting fee if a cake is brough in from an outside vendor, so total up the charges (plus the usual $50 to $100 delivery and cake assembly fee) to see how cost effective it really will be if you don't go with the venue's cake baker.
3. Square cakes allow for more slices than round cakes of the same dimension, so you may want to consider this less traditional and more modern shape.
4. Cake toppings can be expensive. Use real (nontoxic) flowers or look for inexpensive gum-paste decorations from an online cake decorating supplier; like partycakes.com, shopbakersnook.com or wilton.com.
5. For the most dramatic savings, create the cake yourself (ta-da!) or have a friend or family member who is a Martha Stewart in the kitchen bake it for you.

Very good ideas. Never thought about using cake dummies and real cake together. Will be sure to pass this on to all my friends.
