And there off...This year the Kentucky Derby will be held this weekend, May 3rd. So, If you've decided to join the action this year, you can choose to make your party an elegant, high-society event, or a more casual infield bash, because either one will capture the flavor of the day.
So, here are a few ideas on how to celebrate the "run for the roses".
What to drink: Mint Juleps are the drink of the day.
2 teaspoons sugar
6 to 8 mint leaves
1/2 cup finely crushed ice
2 ounces Bourbon
Chill a silver tumbler or julep mug. Add to chilled mug the sugar, water, and mint leaves. Using a spoon, crush mint gently. Add a scant 1/2 cup of finely crushed ice; pour Bourbon over the ice. Do not stir, but let stand a few minutes until the mug is frosty.
What to wear: Break out your big, floppy sun hat. They actually have a hat parade for this race. It is one of the biggest pre-race events. From the fantastic to the sublime there are no rules for this event. Some believe that the hat helps to improve their luck. Good Luck!
How to Decorate: Roses! A horseshoe shaped wreath in red roses just like the one they give to the winner of the Kentucky Derby. For a more casual event decorate the tables with red and white checkered tablecloths and serve southern bbq and for a more formal, high-society event take out the white tablecloth and break out the china and silver. Serve tea sandwiches and other assorted finger foods. For either type of party don't forget to give all the guests betting sheets. Nothing like a little friendly competition to really get the party going. Play country music to set the mood of this big southern event.
